Havering branch and local residents rally to save threatened libraries

On Wednesday (4 September), a rally organised by Havering LG branch brought together local residents, councillors, and activists in a passionate show of opposition to Havering Council’s proposal to close four of the borough’s ten public libraries. The council has cited a £32.5m budget shortfall as the reason for the potential closures, which have sparked widespread concern in the community.

The rally featured heartfelt speeches from activists, community members and councillors, with contributions from residents of all ages and backgrounds. Speakers highlighted the vital role libraries play, not only as sources of books and educational resources but also as essential community hubs offering safe spaces and access to computers for those who need them.

UNISON has urged Havering Council to reconsider the closures and explore other avenues to address the budget shortfall, stressing that the long-term social and economic costs far outweigh any short-term savings.
