Haringey Council has become the latest local authority in the capital to sign up to UNISON’s anti-racism charter, says UNISON today (Thursday).
The charter, which aims to tackle racism in the public sector, commits organisations and their leaders to having a clear and visible race equality policy, as well as a programme of anti-racism initiatives such as training for all staff.
It also includes promoting a diverse workforce, addressing the impact of racism on staff wellbeing, and regularly reviewing strategies to improve racial equality, diversity, and inclusion so the organisation can better reflect the communities it serves. The charter is part of a wider UNISON initiative to combat racism in the workplace.
UNISON London regional secretary Jo Galloway said: “Haringey Council’s commitment to the anti-racism charter is a significant step towards creating a truly inclusive workplace where every member of staff feels valued and respected.
“Racism has no place in public services, and this charter is a clear signal that the council is dedicated to tackling these deep-rooted inequalities.
“There’s still a lot of work to do, but signing the charter is a strong move and the union will continue to work with Haringey to make it a success.”
Leader of Haringey Council councillor Peray Ahmet said: “Tackling racism is something very personal to me and I’m delighted we have signed this charter to show our commitment to this.
“Haringey has a proud tradition of fighting for equality and as an administration we want to be open and transparent about where we need to improve.
“I’m very proud to be leader of such a diverse borough and council and look forward to continuing to work with UNISON to deliver on these pledges.”
