Every October, we dedicate a month to celebrating Black History Month. It’s a time to acknowledge and honour the contributions of Black Britons, both past and present. Their stories of achievement, resilience, and struggle have often been overlooked or undervalued throughout history.
This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Narratives,” is a powerful call to action. We’re reclaiming control of Black stories, celebrating Black heritage, and ensuring these voices are heard loud and clear.
Black in UNISON: Defining Black
In UNISON, Black is used to indicate people with a shared history. Black with a capital ‘B’ is used in its broad political and inclusive sense to describe people in Britain who have suffered colonialism and enslavement in the past and continue to experience racism and diminished opportunities in today’s society.
Taking Action in Your Branch
UNISON is committed to building a truly inclusive and anti-racist union. This Black History Month, we encourage all branches to get involved. Here are a few ways to mark the occasion:
Organise an event or recruitment initiative:
- Showcase Black history in the UK and highlight the vital role of the Black Members Self-Organised Group within UNISON.
- Use this as an opportunity to connect with Black members and encourage increased participation in the union.
Explore Black History resources:
- Timeline of Black British trade unionism history
- Timeline of South Asian workers in shaping British labour history
- Black History Month UK Resources
