Hillingdon Council pauses nursery closures due to UNISON campaign

Hillingdon Council have delayed plans to close three early years nurseries following a successful UNISON campaign.

The campaign started after Hillingdon Council wrote to staff and UNISON back in August informing them of their decision to close three early years nurseries. The move – which came as a shock to staff – would take effect from 31st December 2022.

Concerns were raised by UNISON, that neither the union or the staff were consulted prior to any decision being made.

Hillingdon UNISON worked closely with parents, community groups and the trade council campaigning against the planned closure, petitions were organised and stalls set up in Uxbridge over the weekends.

The campaign gained great support, and two petitions were submitted opposing the cuts.

Following the submission of the petitions, the council wrote to staff and UNISON on 24th November informing them the planned closure will be put on hold pending further review.

UNISON Greater London regional organiser Shirley Mills said: “We’re really pleased the council have listened to our concerns and paused their plans. However, this is only a temporary reprieve, and our campaign will not stop until the council ditches the proposal entirely.

“The closures of the nurseries will impact the most vulnerable in the community, who are already struggling with the current cost of living situation.”
