Healthcare assistants at Kings College Hospital win campaign to move to a higher pay band

Kings College Hospital has announced plans to review all pay banding of their healthcare assistants following a campaign by UNISON.

The staff, many of whom are currently on band 2, are regularly carrying out work of a higher pay grade says the union.

The trust has committed to working in partnership with UNISON and the other staff unions to move 70% of HCA’s over to band 3 and to develop a clear progression plan.

The healthcare assistants, represented by UNISON, submitted diaries of work carried out which demonstrated they were regularly going above their pay grade.

UNISON Kings College Hospital branch HCA representative Henrietta Dapaah said: “This result shows the strength of being in a union, we believed in ourselves and made our voices heard. It took a lot of hard work, but the reward and success of our campaign has made it worth the effort.”

UNISON Greater London area organiser Remmi Sexton said: “We welcome this move by Kings College Hospital. Healthcare assistants play a vital role in the NHS, and they should be paid fairly for the work they are doing, and we are pleased Kings recognises this fully.

“This is a great result for hard-working staff, and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with Kings.”
