Birkbeck University to potentially cut up to 140 jobs in bid to save money says UNISON

Birkbeck University have announced plans that could see up to 140 jobs cut, as part of a bid to save money says UNISON.

The cuts – which would see roles such as lecturers and administrators reduced – are down to the fall in student numbers claim the university.

The plans are strongly opposed by Birkbeck UNISON, who have passed a motion of no confidence in senior management team as a result.

UNISON Birkbeck University branch secretary Rebecca Strong said: “Hard working staff are being made to suffer for managerial incompetence. These cuts are a recipe for managed decline – with fewer staff in key teams such as recruitment and admissions, Birkbeck will have fewer students in future, leading to a vicious cycle.

“UNISON stands in solidarity with colleagues across the college and are committed to working with our comrades in Birkbeck UCU and other staff unions in fighting these cuts.”
